The firm awarded a total of eight scholarships this year, including three to Westchester County (N.Y.) students, one to a Philadelphia-area student and two others to New York City-area students.

"We're pleased to be able to award these scholarships to Lauren and Mateo," said Joel Cooperman, Citrin Cooperman's Managing Partner. Citrin Cooperman Awards Three Westchester Students with McDonagh Memorial Scholarship

Citrin Cooperman announced that three graduating high school seniors from Westchester County were awarded Caroline McDonagh Memorial Scholarships.

The McDonagh scholarships – given to Calvin Alunkal of Ossining High School, Karen Lazaro of Peekskill High School, and Stephen Hart of Sleepy Hollow High School – are part of Citrin Cooperman's 5th annual High School Accounting/Business Student Grant program, which awards grants to students near the firm's offices in White Plains, New York City, Springfield, N.J., and Philadelphia.

Alunkal, Lazaro and Hart will each receive a $1,000 annual grant for four years. Alunkal, 18, of Ossining, will attend New York University's Stern School of Business. Lazaro, 19, of Peekskill, will attend Iona College. Hart, 19, of North Salem, will attend Anna Maria College, in Massachusetts.

Scholarships for Westchester County students were named in McDonagh's honor, following her passing in November 2007 at age 35.

McDonagh had worked for Citrin Cooperman since 2005, and was an active member of the scholarship committee in the White Plains office. McDonagh was a great supporter of scholarship program, and education in general. She graduated from a technical college in her native Ireland before relocating to the United States, and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting at Lehman College while working as a bookkeeper. McDonagh earned her CPA's license just weeks before passing away.

Citrin Cooperman's college grant program, begun in 2005, awards scholarships based on academic achievement and a strong desire to pursue a career in the accounting or business field. In order to continue to receive the grant, the students must be enrolled in college, take at least 12 credits each semester, and maintain a 2.75 GPA. Students are interviewed and chosen by the firm's scholarship committees in its New York, White Plains, New Jersey, and Philadelphia offices.

In addition to the grants, Alunkal, Lazaro and Hart had their names inscribed on a plaque in the White Plains office, and received a picture of Caroline along with a letter that describes the scholarship and the reasons it was named after McDonagh.

"Even though these students never had the chance to meet Caroline, I'm sure they understand what an honor it is to receive a scholarship in her name," said Joel Cooperman, Citrin Cooperman's Managing Partner. "One of Caroline's passions at Citrin Cooperman was the scholarship program, and she personified the hard work and dedication that separates truly great people both in and outside of the workplace."

About Caroline McDonagh

Partner Nick Florio Named Finalist in NY Enterprise Report's "Best Accountants and Attorneys" Awards; Partner Vic Mizzaro Also Nominated

Citrin Cooperman & Company, LLP announced today that partner Nick Florio, CPA was named a finalist among accountants in the "Best Accountants and Attorneys for Growing Businesses Awards," presented by the New York Enterprise Report.

Florio was among five finalists in the Accountant of the Year category. Citrin Cooperman partner Victor Mizzaro, CPA, was also nominated in the "Accountants – Technology" category.

New York Enterprise Report, a monthly magazine devoted to the needs of New York metropolitan area small and growing businesses, conducted the awards program, and honored winners and finalists on June 29 at a dinner at the Trump SoHo in New York City. The Best Accountants and Attorneys for Growing Businesses Awards honors professionals who through their services, help small businesses reach their goals.

"The New York Enterprise Report awards program confirmed what we already knew – that Nick and Victor are among the best at what they do," said Joel Cooperman, managing partner of Citrin Cooperman. "Our firm – from our top partners to our administrative staff – strive to exceed client expectations and to deliver advice and services that enable our clients to grow every day."

All candidates' applications were reviewed by a judging committee, and the five finalists in each of seven categories were then judged by a panel of business leaders and experts.

Florio earned finalist status based on his ability to advise his clients in all aspects of their business – from financial to operational, in order to best positively impact their growth and profitability. He counsels clients in the areas of valuation, profitability analysis, strategic corporate organization, as well as business and tax planning. Florio is recognized as one of the top CPAs and business advisors to the restaurant and staffing industries.

By way of example, Florio assisted one staffing company in growing from $15M to $25M by restructuring their annual budget and management to ensure higher profit levels than ever before. Nick also assisted another client in evaluating state and local tax issues, and together with the client's attorney, worked out a plan to help the company relocate out-of-state in order to take advantage of tax incentives and to gain other operating efficiencies.

Like Florio, Mizzaro was nominated based on his track record of working with clients to offer solutions to financial and operational issues that go far beyond the range of typical accounting work.

While Mizzaro has a strong practice within the real estate industry, for the last eight years he has worked closely with a technology firm, helping it grow from early stages to a full-fledged venture. Mizzaro provides not only auditing and tax work for this tech firm, but also acts as a valued member of its management team, offering advice on accounting-related business decisions.

Citrin Cooperman Joins Moore Stephens North America, Leading Accounting Firm Association

Citrin Cooperman & Company, LLP announced today that it has joined Moore Stephens North America (MSNA), a leading worldwide association of accounting firms.

Citrin Cooperman, headquartered in New York City, is the 56th member of MSNA, which includes accounting firms in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Besides tapping the knowledge of other MSNA member firms, Citrin Cooperman gains worldwide access to members in more than 350 accounting firms in 98 countries as part of London-based Moore Stephens International Limited.

"We've grown steadily over the past 30 years and continue to serve the needs of our clients," said Joel Cooperman, managing partner at Citrin Cooperman. Our prior affiliation with Premier International served us well for many years, but as our firm has grown and our clients have expanded all over the world, we saw a need to join a larger network. Our membership in Moore Stephens further ensures that we can partner with accounting talent almost anywhere in the world to provide solutions where familiarity with local laws, regulations and practices is vital to success."

As a member of MSNA, Citrin Cooperman also becomes a valued resource for association members throughout the U.S. and around the world.

"Operating in and around one of the world's major business centers – New York City – for the past 30 years, we are well positioned to provide a range of accounting and business consulting services to other members and their clients," said Cooperman.

"The addition of Citrin Cooperman to Moore Stephens adds significantly to the overall strength of the association in a number of practice areas and provides us with the necessary expertise in a major economic market," said Steven Sacks, MSNA's executive director. "The firm has proven over three decades in business its ability to help clients succeed by delivering a wide range of accounting, tax and consulting services."

Citrin Cooperman to Conduct Annual Survey of Funeral Home Owners, Directors

Citrin Cooperman & Company, LLP announced that it will be surveying funeral home owners and directors as part of its annual Funeral Directors Survey, which has produced for more a decade.

The survey is available online at www.citrincooperman.com/funeralsurvey, or hard copies can be requested by calling Citrin Cooperman at (973) 218-0500. Results of the survey – typically published in a 70-plus page PowerPoint presentation – will be provided free of charge to participants, and should be available by Nov. 1, 2010. The deadline for participation is July 30.

Citrin Cooperman's annual survey of funeral home owners and directors has provided information on the "state of the industry," based on responses from funeral homes, primarily located in the Northeast, for more than a decade.

The survey covers a number of areas including industry issues and trends, mergers and acquisitions, pricing, payments and financial issues, technology, value of services, the expansion of services, and insight into specific revenue generators such as caskets and pre-need planning.

"Many funeral home directors find the survey results, and even the process of taking the survey, extremely useful, said Ed Horton, partner-in-charge of the Funeral Industry Services practice at Citrin Cooperman. "The results allow funeral homes to compare and contrast the issues they're facing with the rest of the industry. Even taking the survey creates an opportunity for directors to analyze various parts of their business and the issues that they face."

Past surveys have identified trends in pricing, pre-need financing and casket sales, among others. Last year for example, Citrin Cooperman's survey showed that the average price for basic funeral home services in the Northeast increased more than 12 percent over the previous year. Previous surveys pointed out issues in the growth of green and alternative burials and the impact of big box stores, such as Costco, on casket sales.

The survey originally targeted funeral home owners and directors in the greater New York area – New York, Connecticut, New Jersey and Pennsylvania – but has expanded its geographic scope over the last several years. While Citrin Cooperman has offices throughout the New York metropolitan area, and in Philadelphia, the survey is open to funeral home directors throughout the United States.

"Each year it seems that we receive more responses from outside the Northeast region, as the results get shared throughout the industry," said Horton. "There's no reason to believe that the same concerns facing funeral directors here on the East Coast are much different than those on the West Coast and almost all points in between. As we receive more responses from outside of the greater New York area, we'll be able to better compare and contrast."

Funeral home directors interested in more information on this year's survey or copies of previous years' results can contact Horton at (973) 218-0500.

Citrin Cooperman Wealth Management Hosts "Cocktails & Conversation" Featuring Erin Arvedlund, Author of "Too Good to be True: The Rise and Fall of Bernie Madoff"

On May 6, 2010, Citrin Cooperman Wealth Management hosted "Cocktails & Conversation," featuring a book signing and discussion with investigative journalist and author Erin Arvedlund. Arvedlund's recently published "Too Good to be True: The Rise and Fall of Bernie Madoff" offers an in-depth examination of the now infamous hedge-fund manager's career, his empire and his well publicized downward spiral. The event was held at Philadelphia restaurant Table 31, where friends and clients of Citrin Cooperman Wealth Management enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.

Arvedlund was among the first to publicly raise a red flag regarding Madoff's "enviably steady gains" in her 2001 Barron's article, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." The journalist questioned how Madoff's fund continued generating impressive returns despite shifts in market conditions, but did not receive any concrete answers. During the Citrin Cooperman event, Arvedlund provided a revealing look at Madoff's ruinous $65 billion Ponzi scheme, its discovery and ultimately, the man behind it all. Citrin Cooperman Wealth Management President Alan Mandeloff was among the participants at the event.

"The enormity of the fallout from Madoff's swindle offers many critical lessons for investors and financial professionals alike," said Mandeloff. "Ms. Arvedlund's in-depth examination of this unfortunate period in America's financial history was both fascinating and impressive. We appreciate her participation in our event and look forward to continued investigative reporting from this insightful writer and speaker."

"Too Good to be True: The Rise and Fall of Bernie Madoff" is published by Portfolio Trade.

Citrin Cooperman Launches Its First-Ever Ad Campaign in Connecticut Marketplace
"Whatever It Takes" Ads Target Connecticut Legal Market with Man's Best Friend

Citrin Cooperman & Company, LLP recently launched a print advertising campaign to promote the firm's Southport, Connecticut practice to the Connecticut legal community.

The "Whatever It Takes" campaign consists of two print advertisements, and features a fresh take on advertising with an eye-catching dog, illustrating the ability to see solutions to issues, big and small. In one advertisement promoting the firm's overall accounting, tax and advisory services, the copy above the photo reads: Studies have shown that Citrin Cooperman experts are exceptionally skilled at seeing beyond the calculator and into the future of your business.

In keeping with the dog theme, the second ad emphasizes the firm's valuation and forensic accounting experts and their ability to spot details.

The campaign, which kicked off in late March, will run twice a month in the Connecticut Law Tribune throughout the remainder of 2010.

"Having solidified our presence in White Plains, we see expanding into CT as a natural progression. We realized that there was a need for us to enter Fairfield County and support our current clients, as well as strengthen the relationship that we have with Connecticut attorneys, bankers and business community," said Joel Cooperman, the firm's managing partner. "So far, our efforts in Connecticut have been successful, primarily based on the great reputation of our Partners and Alan Schachter's strong team of forensic and valuation specialists. Since the Southport office has grown and we now offer a full set of accounting and tax services, we wanted to inform the legal community about the depth of our services."

The print ads, which were created by Citrin Cooperman's in-house marketing department, are viewable below. "We like to take a fresh approach any time we enter a new market, because no two are alike," said Jean Heaton, Citrin Cooperman's marketing manager. "This campaign reflects our entrepreneurial spirit along with our ability to show the Connecticut legal community how we can provide value."

Citrin Cooperman Raises Over $1,300 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation

On Friday, October 30th, employees at all five Citrin Cooperman offices participated in the monthly "Jeans with a Twist" day. This program allows employees to wear jeans during the work day if they donate $5 or more to a specially selected charity. Citrin Cooperman also matches firm-wide donations.

October's charity was the Susan G. Komen For the Cure Foundation. Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body, and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about own situation. That concern for others continued even when Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan's compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer.

With donations from all five offices and the Firm match combined, $1,360 was raised for this charity.

Basic Funeral Home Services Increased More Than 12 Percent, According to Citrin Cooperman Survey

The average price for basic funeral home services increased more than 12 percent over last year, according to a survey of funeral home executives in the Northeast by accounting and business consulting firm Citrin Cooperman & Company, LLP, as funeral homes sought to maintain revenue and profit levels in what remains a relatively flat market.

"We believe the increases in pricing reflects a pricing correction as funeral home executives come to grips with the service costs associated with low-margin services such as direct cremations and immediate burials," said Ed Horton, partner-in-charge of the Funeral Industry Services practice at Citrin Cooperman. "In the past, the industry has been slow to raise prices, instead attempting to control or cut overhead costs. You can only cut overhead costs so much before risking a diminished quality of service. Funeral homes are still sensitive to cost issues, but there's a better understanding that previous pricing structures had eroded profits to the point that threatened many funeral homes' ability to stay in business."

Citrin Cooperman annually surveys funeral home owners and directors primarily in the Northeast, and this year polled more than 230 respondents primarily from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

The average charge for direct cremations has risen 17 percent since last year, according to the survey. Funeral home executives also raised prices of immediate burials, another traditionally low-margin service, by 16 percent.

"Previously, direct cremations and immediate burials yielded minimum profits, as these services were basically offered at cost," said Horton. "Now we see funeral home executives adjusting their pricing for these services so that they are better compensated for the time and effort required to perform even these ‘no frills' services.

"We believe that these trends represent a long overdue shift in pricing strategy. Many funeral directors are no longer relying on casket sales to generate revenues and profits. As customs change and with cremations on the rise, caskets are increasingly viewed by families as a commodity. With casket revenues on the decline, smart funeral directors are shifting their attention to how they price their services, which is what is truly unique and special about the funeral industry. This shift comes at a time when such services have become more demanding as families are seeking increased personalization of funeral ceremonies."

Another sign of smarter business practices is a decrease in the number of funeral homes that allow customers to lock in pricing on a pre-need basis, despite the fact that the prospect decedent may be alive for many more years. In 2009, 67 percent of funeral homes always or sometimes locked in pricing, as opposed to 75 percent in 2008. Because costs are bound to increase between the initial transaction and the time of the burial, funeral home executives have created a potentially money-losing situation.

"We understand that many funeral directors feel that locking in prices ensures future revenues, but many homes may be mortgaging their future on today's pre-need sales," said Horton.

The survey also noted a continuing trend toward homes adding more offerings and options, and becoming more flexible. Adjustments in services and their pricing are also critical as some funeral directors try to recoup profits from services that are being lost in declining sales of caskets.
Among the survey's other key findings:

  • Cremation and other alternative means of body disposal (such as "green burial") are the bane of the largest number of survey respondents, 42 percent, although this number is down from 48 percent in 2008.
  • When asked the "biggest issue" facing the profession, funeral home execs still ranked cremations as No. 1 (at 29 percent), but closing the gap is profitability concerns, which more than doubled, from 12 percent in 2008 to 25 percent in 2009.
  • The number of owners who live at their funeral homes continued to decrease, from 37 in 2008 to 35 percent this year.
  • Personalization of services remains important, as in past years, although issues such as technology (26 percent vs. 12 last year) and a focus on business (15 percent this year vs. 5 percent last year) are becoming bigger priorities.
  • Less than 60 percent of funeral home executives surveyed say that know the present value of their business, and only half of those have an exit strategy or a formal plan to transfer ownership.
  • Familiarity with "green" cemeteries continues to increase as 94 percent of funeral directors have at least some familiarity with them, as opposed to 63 percent just two years ago.
  • There continues to be a decrease in the number survey participants who own just one home and an increase in the number who own two or more.

"Many of the challenges facing the funeral home industry remain the same as in recent past, but now the economy has been thrown into the mix," said Horton. "After years of cost cutting, and flat death rates not predicted to rise until 2020, profits are still being squeezed. The good news is that industry executives are broadening services and increasing prices to better meet these challenges."
