One of the six pillars of International Men’s Day is to improve gender relations and promote gender equality not only for men but for women too. In this light IMD's theme for 2021 is “Better relations between men and women.”

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE AN ALLY?

Allyship is important in making sure that everyone is not only invited to the table but is also heard, acknowledged, and recognized for their contributions. To have brave and honest conversations about topics such as equal pay and equitable hiring and promotion, men in positions of power should use their influence, knowledge, and resources to support women (including persons who identify as women).

When men commit to equity and speak up on behalf of women, other men might be motivated to also act as allies. Merely signaling that you want to be a good ally is an important first step and may lead to better relations with women.

When women perceive men as supportive colleagues, it makes them feel more integral to the workplace. A good starting point for men who want to be allies is to find more ways to express their support at work.
